Police have confirmed that a 23-year-old woman was killed after being struck by a train at Wimbledon station last night.

The woman, believed by to be from Walton-on-Thames, was fatally struck by the Waterloo to Exeter service which passed through Wimbledon at about 7.30pm.

British Transport Police officers, who were called at 7.31pm, arrived on the scene alongside paramedics from London Ambulance Service.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and her death is being described by police as "unexplained" pending an investigation.

A BTP spokesman said: "BTP officers are currently working to confirm the woman's identity and establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, including how she came to be on the track.

"Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact British Transport Police on Freefone 0800 40 50 40, quoting incident number 372 of 08/01/2012."
