A young Tamil father was stabbed to death at a child's party on Saturday night, it has emerged.

The 28-year-old man, who had a young wife and a baby but has not yet been named, was killed at the New Horizon Centre in South Lodge Avenue, Mitcham.

A fight had broken out at a party after a traditional naming ceremony for a two-year-old Tamil child.

Police were called to reports of a fight at the community centre in Pollards Hill at 11.40pm, but the man, who comes was pronounced dead at the scene with stab wounds.

No arrests have yet been made and it is understood that the incident is not related to gangs.

The man’s family have been informed and a post-mortem examination is due to take place later today at St George’s Hospital, Tooting.

In response, Mitcham and Morden MP Siobhain McDonagh has organised a meeting for concerned residents at the community centre on at 7pm on Tuesday (October 25), in which further details about the incident should be revealed.

Ms McDonagh said: “It is obviously very shocking and dispiriting. This man had a young family and it is just so senseless.”

Yesterday, an incident room was opened in Lewisham under Detective Chief Inspector Mark Dunne, from the Homicide and Serious Crime Command.

DCI Dunne said: "I am appealing to anyone who was in or around the South Lodge Avenue area, and who may have seen or heard anything around the time of the incident on Saturday night to call our Incident Room."
