Mainline train services are running again at Wimbledon station after a woman was fatally struck this morning.

The station's mainline services re-opened and passengers were allowed back on to platforms at about 11.40pm after the incident occured at just after 10am.

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokeswoman said the woman is believed to be in her 60s and the death is being treated as non-suspicious.

She said: “Officers are currently working to establish the identity of the woman and inform next of kin.

“A file will be prepared for the coroner.”

A spokeswoman for the London Ambulance Service said they were called to the station at 10.10am and pronounced the woman dead at the scene, while another woman was treated for shock.

SWT had released a statement confirming the death and had said that no trains would call at Wimbledon until about 1pm. First Capital Connect and Transport for London's Tramlink services also passed through Wimbledon without stopping during the police investigation.

Station worker: "They had to move the whole train before they could move the body."

Workers at Wimbledon station have given their reactions to this morning's tragic incident, writes Oscar Williams-Grut.

Amol Gadkari, who works at a Starbucks kiosk on platform 7, next to where the incident happened, said the train was halfway down the platform before it finally stopped.

Mr Gadkari said: "We heard the [train's] horn which was unusual. He [the driver] was probably trying to warn people that someone was on the tracks.

"The driver used the emergency brakes, but it took a while to stop."

Michaela Bejan, who works at Snoggy, a South African fast food shop within the station, said: "They quickly closed the station. Everyone was a little bit confused.

"It was very sad. When you hear something like this you think maybe you could have helped, but you only hear after."

Kazi, who works at the Dino's fast food shop on the main station concourse, said: "An hour after [the incident] they took the body.

"The body was under the middle of the train so they had to move the whole train before they could move the body."

Bebin, who works at the ATM Coffee stand, said: "Some people were totally shocked, some people felt sorry. Sometimes it happens but we don't like to talk about it. The last time [in April] was horrible."
