An appeal to trace a war hero shot down in Germany has now turned up a photo of the pilot in question.
RAF Flight Sergeant Frederick Albert Wall, from Carshalton, was shot down on March 6, 1945 while attacking an oil plant in Salzbergen, Germany.
Relatives of the pilot, who was 29 when he died, are being sought by German authorities who have erected a memorial at the crash site.
Following the appeal last week, a photo of the pilot has now been uncovered after a relative of Sergeant William Watson - who flew with Sergeant Wall and died in the crash at Salzbergen – came forward.
Dr. Colleen Fitzpatrick, a forensic genealogist from America, has also picked up the story.
She has searched through hundreds of records to find details of Sergeant Wall’s family tree and passed the information to the Sutton Council’s press office who are currently trying to trace living relatives of Sergeant Frederick Wall.
Records at Sutton Council show Sergeant Wall's parents were Albert and Kate Wall. It is understood they may have moved from Carshalton to Shoreditch in east London.
