More than 40 firefighters are battling to control a blaze that has ripped through the roof of a two-storey residential building in Mitcham.

Police have sealed off part of Cranmer Road as eight fire crews attempt to extinguish the fire on a small development of flats in Cranmer Farm Close.

Unconfirmed reports suggest the blaze is under control and according to a London Fire Brigade spokesman there are not thought to have been any casualties.

The alarm was raised at 3.10pm with police called to the scene 20 minutes later.

A police spokesman said it was too early to establish if the cause was suspicious. An investigation is expected to begin within the next two hours.
