The last time Helen Brett – who was 101-years-old yesterday – went to the cinema, Charlie Chaplin was the film’s star and the pictures were in black and white.

So when the Morden resident wrote to the Wimbledon Guardian asking where she could get hold of some 3D glasses, we not only got her a pair, but we took her to Wimbledon’s Imax Odeon for a birthday treat.

She and husband Stan, 86, from Westcroft Gardens saw Shrek 3D – a film with the latest cinematic technology.

Mrs Brett said: “My sight for ordinary things is dimming but when I saw a TV programme about 3D films, I thought if the pictures come right up at you that’s bound to help me. But someone said I needed 3D glasses so I contacted the paper.

“The film was amazing. I felt I could touch what was going on. I like animals and when the donkey came dashing forward towards us, I wanted to stroke him. I just can’t fathom how it works but it’s absolutely incredible.

“It’s been at least 70 years since I went to the cinema. I can’t remember the name of the film, but it starred Charlie Chaplin and was shot in black and white.

“Back then most of the films were silent and even though we didn’t have a television at home, going to the cinema wasn’t as incredible as what we’ve just seen.

“I’m so glad I watched it. If I’d died when I was 100, I never would have had the chance to look into the future. It certainly was a wonderful experience.”

Thanks to Wimbledon Odeon and happy birthday Helen, from everyone at the Wimbledon Guardian.
