Aragon Primary School proved its determination to teach the importance of being green by hosting a sustainable schools forum featuring a host of special speakers.

Tom Walsh, from Sustainable Merton, and Amy Fetzer, journalist and sustainability consultant, spoke to the Morden pupils at the event, funded with a £500 grant from the Government Office for London.

Headteacher Gill Wilson said she was proud of the enthusiasm with which pupils approached the forum and green activities around the school.

She added: “The work our eco-schools lead teacher Tracy Riccio does with our committed pupils is invaluable.

“We see ourselves as a sustainable school where we work to integrate the environment into our curriculum, our core values and our work with the local community.”

The programme has also taught children about living a healthy lifestyle and growing food.

Pupil James Lucas said: “I manage our school vegetable plot and really enjoy being outside and seeing the seeds I plant grow into things I like to eat.”

Merton Council director of environment and regeneration, Chris Lee, called the forum an excellent opportunity for children, parents and teachers to share what they are doing for the environment.

Mr Walsh said he hoped the forum would become a 'one stop shop' for people to find guidance and improve energy efficiency.

The school was commended at this year's Green Guardian Awards and received a coveted Green Flag.
