Bomb-disposal officers have detonated a bag containing wiring and car headlights in a controlled explosion at Wimbledon station.

The package, spotted unattended on a District Line platform at 2.15pm today, was destroyed within an hour, police said.

Hundreds of passengers were escorted from the station, shops in the Broadway were evacuated, and the road closed as police and sniffer dogs searched the area.

It is yet to be confirmed if the package was a fake bomb intentionally placed on the platform, or an item of lost property accidentally left at the station.

The area has since reopened including shops forced to close as officers from the Met Police evacuated a large part of Wimbledon town centre.

Train, Tube and tram services were also suspended but have since resumed.

A spokesman for South West Trains said British Transport Police were coordinating the response, but added: "We have very detailed security procedures that our staff follow when any suspicious item such as this is discovered."
