The discovery of a suspicious package has shut Wimbledon station.

Hundreds of people have been evacuated from the station, and rail services – including Underground and tram services – have been suspended.

A spokesman for Transport for London said the item was reported on one of the station’s Underground platforms at about 2.10pm.

The Broadway is closed outside the station and traffic is being diverted. Neighbouring shops have also been evacuated but a spokesman for Centre Court shopping centre said its stores are currently open and they are awaiting further instruction.

Police officers and an ambulance crew are on standby at the station, and a bomb disposal team has arrived. Police sniffer dogs are searching the are and fire crews are also on standby.

A spokesman for South West Trains said British Transport Police were coordinating the response, but added: "We have very detailed security procedures that our staff follow when any suspicious item such as this is discovered."
