Snow and freezing weather caused traffic chaos in Merton yesterday - although the borough has so far escaped the worst of the winter weather.

Sudden, heavy snowfall yesterday afternoon delayed commuters returning home. Lauren Freedman, an employee of the Jigsaw clothes shop in Wimbledon Village, took more than an hour to travel from work to her home in Morden. She said buses had stopped running in the heavy snow - with one driver pulling over but refusing to let anyone onboard for half an hour.

She described the snow covered streets near the High Street shop as “quite chaotic but really beautiful".

Other commuters reported buses sliding and slipping on the ice on the roads connecting Wimbledon with Southfields in Wandsworth. Heavy traffic was reported in South Wimbledon, Colliers Wood and Mitcham as vehicles slowed down to avoid any icy spots.

A resident from Chester Road in Wimbledon said the council had yet to grit any side roads which had been left "lethal to pass".

He added: "It's really not good enough. Sadiq Khan, transport minister, said on the radio this morning that lessons had been learnt from earlier this year but that doesn't seem the case."

Fire chiefs at Wimbledon and Mitcham said because the worst of London's snowfall had missed the borough, there were no major incidents. Pete Martin, station manager at Mitcham, said while the heavy traffic had caused some minor delays there “hasn’t been a flurry of accidents”.

Merton Council reported that major roads, bus routes, roads leading to fire stations and hospitals and the borough’s “hazardous locations” were all gritted at 5am yesterday.
