Wimbledon's Mitzvah volunteers give generously

A flood of good deeds hit Wimbledon last Sunday.

Wimbledon and District Synagogue held nine events to mark Mitzvah Day - a national scheme encouraging the community to give it’s time for great causes.

Members of the synagogue visited patients at St. George’s Hospital in Tooting, hosted a lunch for older people and organised tea for guests from the Wimbledon Guild.

A knitting circle made squares to be turned into blankets for the elderly in Eastern Europe through charity Pomegranate - and 80 children turned T-shirts into operating gowns for cleft palate operations in India as part of a Blue Peter campaign.

Cooking for the homeless, a recital at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and a visit to the Cenotaph in support of ex-servicemen also took place.

Mitzvah Day organiser Marian Conn said: “In these credit crunch times it’s good to know we can all still do our bit for charity by giving, not cash, but a little time. That’s what Mitzvah Day is all about and I am delighted that so many people turned out to support our event.”

Across the country more than 15,000 people took part in about 250 Mitzvah Day events.
