Search is on for Merton's young environmentalist

The search is on to find Merton’s most outstanding young environmentalist as nominations flood in for the borough’s Green Guardian awards.

Last year’s winner proved that age is no barrier when it comes to protecting the environment after 11-year-old James Salter scooped both the borough and overall south London Green Guardian young environmentalist award.

The former Wimbledon Park primary pupil bowled over judges by the lengths that he had gone to in persuading staff, pupils, and parents at the school to protect the environment.

He was pivotal in producing an eco-newsletter, highlighting the range of energy-saving measures implemented at the school, while offering tips to less environmentally-concious parents on how to live more sustainable lives .

“I just think the environment in such a beautiful thing and we need to do all we can to protect it,” James said.

“Children are the future and we’re the big hope that things can be changed. We can’t alter things that have already been done but we can stop the mistakes from the past from being repeated.”

Entries for all the Green Guardian Award categories have opened, rewarding individuals and groups or businesses that have made an outstanding environmental contribution to Merton.

Green households, green school, green concept, green building, and an individual green champion will also be recognised.

Winners and runners-up will be invited to an awards ceremony in the borough later this year.

The winners of the borough final will automatically go through to the regional Green Guardian Awards in February.
