A birthday party has marked a first class first year for Mitcham’s new station.

Residents, councillors and schoolchildren marked a successful first year for Mitcham Eastfields station with the celebration at the nearby St Mark’s Academy.

Train operators have reported about 130,000 journeys to and from the Eastfields Road station since it opened last June, with the ticket office taking more than £500,000.

The £6m station was the first in Britain to be built using a modular design and pre-fabricated buildings. Wednesday’s event featured a performance by St Mark’s Samba Band and a special birthday cake created by local baker Shammim Haarhoff.
