A former pupil at Whitgift School will be viewed on TV by thousands of cricket fans as the final Ashes test takes place.

Laurie Evans is the mystery batsman in the Brit Insurance adverts on Sky sports’ test match coverage.

The 21-year-old is a talented all-rounder at Surrey County Cricket Club, who are also sponsored by Brit Insurance.

Mr Evans was chosen to star in the advert by chance – he was injured when the advert was being filmed but was fit enough to bat.

He said: “Everyone else was away playing and they were looking for a right handed batsman, so I fitted the bill.”

Mr Evans has had his fair share of injuries but is hoping to stay fit and establish himself in the Surrey first team next season.

He had a good season captaining Surrey’s second XI and appearing for the first XI in all forms of the game.

He proved his technique was not just good for the cameras, hitting an impressive 75 for the Malden Wanderers, his main club, in the Surrey Championship Premier Division on Saturday as his side beat Guildford by four wickets.

Overall he has scored 353 runs in the league this year at an average of 35.

He hopes to try and make the England team in the future.

On the deciding final Ashes Test starting at the Oval this Thursday, Mr Evans thought the game was on a knife-edge.

He said: “It’s a massive game with huge pressure. Flintoff returning and the home crowd will be a massive boost for England but Australia are looking strong and playing well.

“It will be an excellent game”.
