Waitrose for Wimbledon

A supermarket chain claims 150 jobs could be created with the arrival of a new store in Wimbledon.

Waitrose has announced plans to open a new store in Alexandra Road, on a vacant site formerly occupied by DIY store B&Q.

The 1,712 sq m supermarket would also have a 99 space car park.

Designs for the new development will go on display at Wimbledon Library in Wimbledon Hill Road on July 24 and 25 before a planning application is submitted to Merton Council.

Nigel Keen, the chain’s director of development, said: “We have wanted to come to Wimbledon for a long time and in Alexandra Road we believe we have found a location that will allow us to trade successfully.

“Through revitalising a vacant building, we would not only be able to create new jobs, but provide a wider choice of shopping services for the local community.”

150 jobs? Hmm. So no-one thinks it's likely to cannibalise the Morrisons, the Tesco and the Sainsburys that Wimbledon has already got, then?

Can't say I have any objections though, if the building is otherwise going to be empty.

Looking forward to it opening!

Good to see the b&q site used for something - at the moment it just seems to attract graffiti.

5 supermarkets for Wimbledon does seem a bit excessive though... wonder what will happen in the future.

Fred, you forgot the M&S in the Centre Court :-D I don't mind, would definitely have a snoop around there when it's built. Didn't even realise the B&Q was gone there...

This development is misconceived. It will only encourage more car usage as it is slightly away from the main town centre. Why don't Waitrose take over the vacant Woolworths store in the Broadway?
