A Morden man who coated his house in aluminium foil to counter the effects of a phone mast is now petitioning the Prime Minister.

Simon Densley is so worried the phone mast at the end of his road in Love Lane is a risk to his health that he has been to Downing Street this month to deliver a protest letter to the Prime Minister.

The 37-year-old has lobbied Gordon Brown to not only remove the mast but is also trying to get the Government to acknowledge research linking exposure to phone radiation with an increased risk of cancer.

He said: "People might like their mobile phones but whether or not they or the masts are safe is a separate issue. We can't keep our head in the sand about the scientific evidence.

"The effects don't usually start to show up until a few years after the mast has been switched on. I have already had one inconsolable mother knock at my front door telling me her seven-year-old son had just been diagnosed with leukaemia.

"I checked the levels of microwave radiation in their home which was around 100 metres from the mast, and found them to be very high in some areas.

"That's not to say that it proves the mast caused the cancer, but we are seeing more and more of these situations around the country."

He added: "The mast on my road is still there and I'm going to keep fighting this issue, not just until it's removed but so that the Government starts to listen. We've already moved up from covering our house in foil to lobbying at Number 10."

Mr Densley campaigning has led him to helped establish the pressure group Mast Sanity. Details of the organisation's research can be found on mastsanity.org.uk

Yes more and more people are taking similar precautions against this serious health threat. There is now a wealth of evidence that mobile phone masts emit dangerous pulsing radiation giving rise to a higher risk of serious illnesses, such as cancers and neurological diseases. Some of these take many years to manifest, but other symptoms, such as impairment of concentration and sleep disturbance can take effect relatively quickly. The risks are greater for children because their skulls are thinner so the radiation penetrates more deeply and they are likely to suffer exposure for longer over their lifetimes.

Studies have proved that melatonin, the cancer fighting hormone, is suppressed by this pulsing radiation. That's why the cancer clusters continue to increase in the vicinity of phone masts. Phone operators dismiss such research, alleging that their own studies suggests no health risk. However recently the national press revealed that T-Mobile covered up the damaging results of their own research. The Ecolog Institute, a research organisation which examines the health effects of mobile phones, was commissioned by T-Mobile to investigate the possible health risks of mobile phone masts. The 2003 Ecolog report confirmed:

'Given the results of the present epidemiological studies, it can be concluded that electromagnetic fields with frequencies in the mobile telecommunications range do play a role in the development of cancer. This is particularly notable for tumours of the central nervous system.'

This is a time bomb which the telecoms industry is trying to obscure, just like the tobacco industry did. Phone masts should not be sited within 350 metres of schools or housing and unless the public starts to stand up for our health, we will see a lot of deaths before the government and phone operators have to admit the damage this technology is causing. Many of us are minimising our use of mobile and cordless phones, and removing wifi and other wireless technology so as to reduce our risks, despite the inconvenience, because the health risks are so significant. Siting phone masts next to housing and schools is scandalous.

It is high time something was done about this.
There is obviously an issue here as many studies now show harmful effects of EMR to biological cells.
Children especially should be protected as much as possible and this is not happening in UK as it now is a some other countries.
Also what about all the babies and children sleeping next to DECT cordless phones? They are emitting from base stations all the time they are plugged in - like having your own mast!

Good for him! DSo many people are frightened their homes will lose value and be unsaleable if they make a big fuss.
The "safe" standards vary widely from country to country, but worldwide there is under-reporting of damage from non-ionising electromagnetic fields.
Why? One theory (Paul Brodeur) is that defence interests have exposed so many servicemen and women in the past the damages claims would be huge. I think we can assume from this that private industries would also be afraid and would be trying to keep the wraps on the truth.
Well done, Simon, for standing your ground and speaking out. It takes a man to do that.
