An elderly woman was injured when a bus carrying more than 30 passengers was fired upon with a pellet gun.
The K2 bus was turning in to Berrylands Road from Ewell Road in Surbiton when it came under fire about 5.15pm Friday.
One pellet slammed through a large side window, shattering the glass and showering the elderly woman with glass.
Passenger Rolf Hedges was on the bus with his four-year-old daughter Piper when the slug shattered the window.
"There was a huge crack," self-employed businessman Mr Hedges said.
"There was a woman who got glass shrapnel in the face. She was in some pain."
Mr Hedges said the bus driver pulled over and hit his alarm but the police did not turn up for more than 40 minutes.
"It was absolutely atrocious," Mr Hedges said. "For them to take 40 minutes is unacceptable."
By the time the police arrived, Mr Hedges said, another K2 bus passed the stop and most of the passengers left before they could be interviewed.
"They took a statement from me and another lady and the injured lady," Mr Hedges said.
"An ambulance took the injured lady away. The bus driver was in complete shock."
He said the injured woman had been standing or her injuries could have been much worse.
"If it had hit head height level someone could have been blinded or worse," Mr Hedges said.
The injured woman was so shaken by the incident she had to call her daughter to the bus stop for help, Mr Hedges said.
He said he and Piper had been on the bus, which runs from Kingston Hospital to Hook Library, coming home from Piper's swimming lessons.
"I get the bus two or three times a week and I have never seen anything like this," Mr Hedges said.
A Kingston police spokeswoman said officers had been on the scene within seven mintues of the alarm being raised.
She said police received the call to the bus at 5.37pm and were there by 5.43pm.
She said police had again contacted the injured woman yesterday, who she said was recovering well.
The spokeswoman appealed for anyone with information to phone Kingston Safer Transport Team on 020 8721 5849.
