Gaffe-prone Tory mayoral candidate Boris Johnson has said the best thing about London is being able to buy mango juice and mange tout.

Johnson, 43, was speaking at a breakfast meeting of the London Jewish Forum when he was asked how the capital has improved since his childhood.

Addressing 60 community leaders at the Montcalm Hotel, he said: "Mobile telephones, the internet . . . no, the whole country has those."

When someone from the audience yelled "restaurants", Johnson replied: "Yes, you eat well. Thank you. Who would have dreamt you could go into Tesco and buy mange tout, or your newsagent for mango juice?"

Johnson has frequently embarrassed his party in the past.

In October 2004, The Spectator magazine under his editorship carried an editorial claiming residents of Liverpool were wallowing "vicarious victimhood" in the wake of the execution in Iraq of Liverpudlian Kenneth Bigley.

It was also suggested that Liverpudlians had refused to accept responsibility for their part in the 1989 Hillsborough football disaster.

He was ordered by then party leader Michael Howard to make a tour of the city as an apology for the insult.

In a column for GQ in April, Mr Johnson upset MPs for Portsmouth after he claimed it was one of the most depressed towns in south England and full of drugs.

The last thing that London needs is Eton educated weirdo Boris. Why can't he just stick to Henley?

Who is giving Boris the cue cards? I would like to know why he would like to keep the failed Kengestion Charge "unless there's something better to replace it".

Surely not taxing people for the pleasure of driving in congestion would be better, as (at the end of the last accounting year) the Kengestion charge has made minimal real profit and seen road speeds drop as Ken's so-called "transport improvements" are made.

I think that the Mayor of London needs to be someone who has lived and worked in London for many years.

According to Wikipedia, Boris Johnson was born in New York and educated in Brussels, Eton and Oxford. He became the MP for Henley in 2001.

He lives in Islington now, but is that enough to qualify him as an expert on the needs of London and its residents?

Interesting, Angie: much of what you said probably applies just as well to half of Ken's "cabinet" - or whatever it's called these days - but if you dared to say that about them, your post would probably be deleted, just as mine was of 17th Dec. for having the audacity to observe: "So, Boris 'was speaking at a breakfast meeting of the London Jewish Forum': he obviously knows who he has to keep in with if he really wants to get anywhere in British (or American) politics then, doesn't he? A good move, especially considering the Chosen People are less than enamoured with 'our' Ken".

It would seem that in the matter of free speech, some pigs (A reference to "Animal Farm", for those who don't know) are more equal than others.
