Right-wing extremist groups have hijacked the death of New Addington roofer Billy Ward to spread race hate messages across the country.

Racists have been using the stabbing of the former Selsdon High pupil to whip up racial tension in internet chat rooms.

Distasteful racist rants have been published on some far-right websites, wrongly labelling Mr Ward's death as a racist attack. Police were not treating the attack as racially motivated.

Mr Ward, 21, was found at the junction of Gravel Hill and Selsdon Park Road at about 3.40am on Saturday suffering from multiple stab wounds.

He had been travelling back to Selsdon on the N159 night bus after a night out in Croydon.

Mr Ward, from King Henry's Drive, New Addington, was pronounced dead at 4.30am after medics failed to save him.

Detective Chief Inspector Damian Allain, who is leading the murder investigation, said: "This is a tragedy for any family and it is clearly very upsetting at this time."

Friends and family of Mr Ward left tributes to the 21-year-old on the Croydon Guardian's website, describing him as a "fun guy who liked to have a laugh with his friends".

The tributes also included: "Billy went to my primary school and senior school. No one deserves to die young."

Another said: "Billy was a friend, he was a good guy and was always up for a laugh with his friends. You will be sadly missed mate - we will always remember your cheesey smile. Rest in peace Billy."

Two teenagers arrested shortly after Mr Ward's death have been charged with his murder.

Starfield Badza, 18, of Croydon, was due to appear at Croydon Magistrates' Court yesterday after another 18-year-old appeared in court on Monday charged with Mr Ward's death.

Junior Lumbango, of Friars Wood, Pixton Way, Forestdale, spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth.

He was remanded in custody until March 17, when he is due to appear at the Old Bailey for a preliminary hearing.
