A woman was struck by a train as she leant over the track to be sick.

The 28-year-old woman was left with a fractured skull and a deep cut to her head after the incident at Purley Oaks train station last night.

The driver of the non-stop 6.12pm service from Watford to Gatwick saw the woman leaning over the platform edge as he came through the station.

He sounded his horn to warn her and slammed on the brakes but struck her and she fell back onto the platform.

The woman was taken by ambulance to St George's Hospital in Tooting.

A British Transport Police spokeswoman said: "We were called to Purley Oaks train station at around 7.15pm after reports a woman had been hit by a train while leaning over the platform. The reason she leant over was the she felt unwell."

A spokeswoman for the London Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 7.20pm to an incident involving a train and a pedestrian at Purley Oaks Station.

"We sent two ambulances and a fast response car to the scene. A 28-year-old woman was taken to St George's Hospital in Tooting with head injuries but was fully conscious."

Hundreds of commuters faced severe delays on their way home as only two of the four lines operated between East Croydon and Purley.

A spokesman for Southern Railways said: "The current was restored and the lines were reopened just after 8pm and delays to train services continued right up until close of service last night.

"We had some cancellations as a result, but not many. Delays to services were running up to 80 minutes all evening."

A shame that it occurred, but what happened to her common sense?

Common sense tells me never to lean over the edge of a platform, regardless of the circumstances.

Jock, I believe "the reason she leant over was the she felt unwell" is generally Journalese for "she was extremely drunk."

With all due respect, Pete. Go and take Walkabout.

There are people in England who can feel unwell without imbibing copious amounts of 'sheepdip' a.k.a. Fosters.

Unless you can show me a newsfeed which proves she was sauced, get back to the barbie...

Leave the ethnic stereotypes at home, Jock. It's not a good look.

Like it or not, journalists have always used polite jargon and phrases for these things. Whether it's "under the weather" (too drunk to provide an interview), "tired and emotional" (drunk, loud and abusive), and a plethora of other similar phrases. It's all about informing without giving cause for a libel suit.

Never mind if she was ill, drunk, very drunk, tired and emotional, or however you may wish to phrase it, how about sparing a thought for the Driver, and how emotional he/she may be feeling.

Spot On Chris. The trauma of this or other professional drivers can ruin their lives even though inquests often prove they did exceptionally well in attempts to stop. Death and serious injury always has long term repurcussions

Chris, I agree. I imagine he or she would be relieved the accident wasn't a lot worse though.

If train drivers don't have on-demand access to counsellors in London already, they should.

They do Pete! I also believe that it can take a year to a year and a half of counselling before they are able to go back to work. They do however get substantial compensation if it happens and I believe some drivers hope that an incident will occur at one point or another so that they will get it.

I have her down as just plain stupid. I hope the train knocked some sense into her. The world would be a better place if everyone just thought about how their actions would effect themselves and others!
