University pays tribute to student shot dead in car

Kingston University has paid tribute to the "friendly and polite young man" who was shot dead in Plumstead last weekend.

Philip Poru is the second Kingston University student to be killed in the last two months.

The 18-year-old had just started a joint honours degree in media and cultural studies with television and new broadcasting media.

He was shot as he sat in a silver Ford Fiesta in Plumstead, at around 10pm on Sunday, October 14.

A post-mortem examination revealed he died of gunshot wounds to the chest.

Lecturer Steven Bastow, who taught Philip, said staff and fellow students had been saddened to learn of his death.

"Philip had only just begun his studies at Kingston University but had already demonstrated a strong interest in film and media," said Mr Bastow.

"He came across as a friendly and polite young man who also enjoyed sport including football, table tennis and working out at the gym."

No arrests have yet been made and police are keeping an open mind about whether the incident is gang related.

In August this year, Evren Anil, who had just gained a first class degree in computer sciences from Kingston University, was killed following a dispute in Croydon.
