A car was found on fire at 5.12am in a residential road in Wimbledon this morning which was believed to be involved in an earlier cash transit robbery.

Police were called at approximately 5.45am on Wednesday, August 15, to reports of a vehicle on fire on Strathmore Road in Wimbledon Park. One fire engine from Wandsworth Fire Station was at the scene.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “We were called at 5.12am to reports of a car alight in Strathmore Road in Wimbledon Park. The fire was under control at 5.28am.”

Detectives believe the vehicle was involved in an earlier robbery incident on Upper Tooting Road, SW17, which took place earlier this morning at 1.50am.

Residents of Strathmore Road were awoken with police and fire sirens early this morning, with fire engines still on the scene after 6am. By 7am, the remains of the car were cordoned off with police tape and a manned police car remained nearby.

The incident remains under investigation by detectives from the Met’s Flying Squad.
