Residents in Merton claim they discovered dust being released near Wandle Park.

Cllr Hayley Ormrod and Nicola Thompson were walking down Wandle Trail when they say they came across a dust cloud.

Cllr Ormrod took a video which shows the cloud on the trail, which is well used by the public. Garfield Primary School sits opposite the site.

Cllr Ormrod said: “Cappagh had applied for a cement batching planning permission but this was rejected. We [Mrs Thompson and Cllr Ormrod] were walking past the site when we hear a loud bang and then were covered in cement dust.

“I imagine this amount of dust would not be very healthy for people to breath in, the trail has loads of nature and is a well-used walking path for residents, especially for parents. There were two workers on the site who refused to comment - Cappagh do not have permission for this, so if they are mixing cement it would be illegally.”

Merton council confirmed they do not have a permit to use the silos. The site is used for storage only.

When approached for a comment Cappagh, said the site is being used lawfully. A spokesman said: “The site is currently being for the storage of cement and other building materials together with vehicle parking. At no time are any material processed or concrete manufactured on site.

“Cappagh takes its relationship with all stakeholders and neighbours extremely seriously. And we strive to ensure we operate in accordance with all laws and best practice.”

Residents have contacted Merton Council on this issue. A Merton Council spokesman said: “We are aware of the sensitivity of this site. Officers have visited and we are investigating the concerns raised by residents.”
