Morden's new leisure centre is "on track to open later this year, Merton Council have said.

The new site in London Road will replace the 1960s Morden Park Pools and includes a 25m six-lane pool, a large second pool with moveable floor for aqua aerobics, parent and toddler classes, diving, a fitness suite with approximately 100 stations, a large studio/community room and a café.

The council have now given an update on how construction work is progressing.

"Works at the leisure centre are on schedule for an autumn opening," a statement by the council read.

"The building has been fully constructed; both swimming pools are currently being tiled and the final mechanical and electrical equipment is being installed.

"Then the building will be ready for the finishing touches of painting, decorating and flooring."

Once the works are complete the council will hand the site over to Greenwich Leisure Limited, the company who currently manage Morden Park Pools as well as Wimbledon Leisure Centre and the Canons Leisure in Mitcham, who will open the new leisure centre to the public shortly afterwards.

Morden Park Pools will be demolished and returned to open space once the new leisure centre opens.

Leader of the council. Stephen Alambritis was pleased to see things were on track.

“It is hard to believe that construction on the site started just under a year ago and our vision of creating a facility for everyone is close to becoming a reality," he said.

"It has been particularly important to me that the leisure centre is accessible to everyone in our community and we have made sure that certain features are included, so the new facility can be enjoyed for generations to come.”
