It has been more than six years since popular policewoman Sergeant Juliet Sowter lost her battle with cancer on the same day she married her then boyfriend John.

During her career she was awarded a Borough Commander's Commendation for bravery, courage and resilience for her part in policing serious public disorder in Croydon during the European Football Championships in June 2004.

She also worked for several years in Croydon Town Centre and subsequently Merton.

This connection between the two towns sparked an idea back in 2012, an idea that would see police from the two boroughs square off in a friendly football match to raise money for charities Macmillan and Cancer Research.

It wasn't just a one off either.

This tradition has kept going throughout the years, with the sixth annual instalment taking place this week.

This time it was the Merton Police who brought home the trophy.

"We beat, nay trounced, Croydon 6-2," Merton wrote on its Facebook page.

"We’d like to thank Croydon for showing up and helping our team practice."

But while the win was nice, it was the money raised that was the true tale of the day.

This time around more than £300 was raised for the two charities.

The yearly match up has now raised over £12,000.
