A pop-up independent creative community hub in Wimbledon is looking for a new home.

The Sound Lounge, a music and arts venue opened a pop-up space on the Broadway for three months in December with the support of the council and local businesses including Love Wimbledon. The pop up had to move out of its previous venue in Tooting due to development.

Joint owner Kieron Marshall said: “We’ve been lucky enough to have this pop up space in Wimbledon since being forced out of our Tooting venue.

“It was an absolutely amazing moment when they called us as we were moving out and we knew it would only be for about three months here in Wimbledon, so together we pulled this pop up off.

“We have hosted some amazing music concerts, family workshops and community events, which have all been fully inclusive to all members of the Merton community.”

Now, Kieron and co-owner Hannah White are determined to keep on going and look for a space.

They managed to raise £15,000 in a month through crowdfunding for their Tooting pop-up and provided almost £30,000 worth of free workshops and community events.

Kieron said: “We were able to set-up our venue in Tooting due to amazing people in the local community.

“It was amazing and helped us to secure a loan to pull the whole thing off. Now it seems we are back in that very same position where we are seeking out donations to the project and people who want to invest into the local community.

“Unfortunately there is now a tenant for the Wimbledon property and at the moment we have no new home to go to and whilst others have said why we don’t rent somewhere else, we just do not have the funds to pay for a huge commercial deposit on a high street property.”

Kieron who grew up in Mitcham said: “I feel a great deal of debt and responsibility to the community who have helped to make this all happen and who have given us these amazing opportunities and what I truly want to do is to have a permanent space, where I am able to give these same possibilities to other people.”

The Sound Lounge will put on a fundraising event at Christ Church, Christchurch Road, Colliers Wood, on Friday, April 20 with events being curated by BBC broadcaster Paul Sexton one of their patrons.

Kieron said: “The evenings aim is to raise money for The Sound Lounge to continue its work that it does and with the long term goal of securing a new, permanent venue that the whole community can call home.”
