World Book Day is tomorrow (March 1) and we’d love to see photos of your little ones dressed up as their favourite characters.

If nothing else, it will give you a chance to show off how creative you’ve been with the making of their costumes!

Use the contribution link below to share your pictures, which we’ll add to a gallery here tomorrow.

Browse through the images above to see a selection of photos sent to us last year showing some of the great outfits kids were sent off to school in.

Ahead of this year’s book day, here is what it’s all about:

What is it?

World Book Day is a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and most importantly, reading. It is the biggest celebration of its kind and is marked in over 100 countries.

March 1 will be World Book Day’s 21st birthday and children of all ages will be given the chance to explore the wonders of reading.

The main aim is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of reading and discover what books they love rather than it being dictated to them.

What happens?

In collaboration with National Book Tokens Ltd, World Book Day sends out thousands of tokens and resource packs to children from nursery age all the way up to secondary school. It is estimated that 15 million tokens will be sent out, which means nearly every child under 18 will receive one.

With these tokens the children can then take this to their local bookseller and pick one of 10 books. Alternatively they can use the token to get money off any book in participating shops.

How can I celebrate in other ways?

Many schools hold character days on World Book Day. The children are encouraged to dress up at their favourite character from their favourite book. Parents often make the costumes themselves to save money and to make sure their child has the best outfit.

There are also live screenings of Q&As with authors beamed into schools so that not only can the children dress like their favourite character, they can be introduced to the authors too.

Who are the most popular characters?

Stats from eBay.co.uk give a good indication as the online marketplace is where a lot of parents go for the bits they need to make their kids’ costumes – or just to buy the costumes ready-made!

Figures shows that boy wizard Harry Potter has topped the character ranking for the fourth year running, with a staggering 35 searches per minute.

He’s well ahead of his nearest rival Dorothy from Wizard of Oz who comes second with 14 searches per minute.

Peter Rabbit, Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan are also set to be popular choices.

There have been 7,000 searches for World Book Day in 2018 as parents gather inspiration and materials for the special occasion.
