Wimbledon Park has been named as one of 13 Tube stations which will become step-free by Spring 2022 as part of a £200million investment.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan announced today the major boost to the accessibility of the London Underground network, which is the biggest push for step-free access in the Tube's 155-year history.

The latest raft of investment - part of the Mayor's draft Transport Strategy - will bring the number of step-free Tube stations to more than 100 - or 40 per cent of the network.

Mr Khan said: “It’s vital that we make our transport network accessible to all Londoners and visitors. That’s why I vowed to significantly improve the services offered at our stations for those with disabilities, parents with pushchairs or anyone who struggles with their mobility.

“These improvements are going to make a big difference in helping Londoners move around our city and show the real progress we are making to improve accessibility right across the capital.”

As part of the Mayor’s Tube accessibility programme, a new lift contract has been introduced that can be replicated across many stations.

Age UK's London chief executive Paul Goulden welcomed the announcement.

He said: "We’re very pleased to see the number of stations with step-free access will rise to more than 100 by 2022.We want London to be as accessible as possible and these changes mean that more older people will have improved access to central London and can enjoy all the city has to offer.”

Stephen Hammond MP said: "I am delighted that Transport for London have finally selected Wimbledon Park to become step free. I have been campaigning for a lift to be installed for years alongside local councillors and I would like to thank all local residents who have supported us."

Councillor Oonagh Moulton said: "We have been campaigning for step-free access at Wimbledon Park since I first stood for election in 2002.

"It has been a long and persistent campaign for our residents and a great result which will help parents and carers, children and those with disabilities those with buggies, wheelchairs, visitors and commuters with heavy luggage."

The other stations to benefit from step-free access include Boston Manor, Burnt Oak, Debden, Hanger Lane, Ickenham, North Ealing, Northolt, Park Royal, Rickmansworth, Ruislip, Snaresbrook and Sudbury Hill.
