14-year-old arrested over £50k jewellery heist

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested over a £50,000 jewellery robbery.

Shocked staff and customers looked on as the two men armed with hammers smashed cabinets and grabbed a hoard of diamond rings from the Chiswick jewellers.

They fled the Turnham Green Terrace store in a waiting Nissan Primera, driven by a third man, just before 2pm yesterday.

Officers from the Flying Squad, based at Barnes, followed the Nissan and intercepted it in conjunction with officers from the MPS Firearms Unit at Beaumont Road.

One man was arrested at the vehicle and the stolen property was recovered.

Two of the gang tried to escape on foot but were later apprehended by police in rear gardens of nearby homes.

Two 17-year-old men and a 24-year-old man were taken to a west London police station.

Two other men, aged 29 and 22, and 14-year-old boy were later arrested in connection with the inquiry when a BMW was stopped by police in Church Road, Northolt. They are also now in custody at the police station.

DI Terry Wilson, of the Flying Squad, said: "We are pleased with the successful outcome of this operation, which led to the recovery of all the property taken and a number of arrests.

"We are committed to protecting the interests of commercial businesses in London, and in particular tackling violent crime."
