Wimbledon Police Station's 24/7 front counter will remain open until mid-2018.

Borough Commander Steve Wallace agreed with the Mayor of London's Office for Police and Crime to keep the front counter at Wimbledon open until the refurbishments at Mitcham are complete.

In a Facebook post he said: “There will be a transition period and we will move when Mitcham front office will be refurbished in 2018.

He added: “I think this is a good practical transitional arrangement."

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) made an announcement on November 1 that many police stations across the capital would close, with many front counters closing today (December 14).

In a statement in November MOPAC said plans to reduce the number of police front counters in London would save an additional £8 million – equivalent to the cost of 140 police constables.

MOPAC said new technology will allow police officers to spend more time on the beat in their communities, where they will be on hand to tackle the issues that matter most to Londoners, such as knife crime, anti-social behaviour, hate crime and extremism, and domestic abuse.

There have been many petitions to save the police station with Cllr Stephen Alambritis writing to Sadiq Khan and the Home Secretary Amber Rudd in October stressing how important the police station is to the town centre.
