South Western Railway workers are set to strike on New Year's Eve, it has been announced.

Staff join Greater Anglia on the walkouts as the rail companies continue to dispute over the role of guards at stations on one of the days.

The Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) Union said they met with Transport Secretary Chris Grayling in an attempt to resolve the disputes which involve five rail operators, however it says there were 'contradictory messages and confusion' from him and his department.

RMT Union general secretary Mick Cash said: "There is chaos and confusion in the rail industry surrounding the Government's position, which makes it almost impossible to negotiate, and I have written to Chris Grayling to express my concern at this lack of clarity and contradictory messages but also to offer further talks not least on the vital issue of accessibility.

"It really should be straightforward - the Scottish and Welsh Governments have agreed to keep the guards on our trains so there is no reason why the UK Government cannot as well."

A South Western Railway spokesman said: "We are extremely disappointed that the RMT executive has decided to inflict more disruption on our passengers by calling more unnecessary industrial action, especially when so many people need to travel to be with friends and family for the New Year celebrations.

"We have repeatedly assured the RMT that we plan to keep Guards on our trains.

"We will put in place contingency plans to keep passengers moving should this strike go ahead."

The strikes will take place on December 27 and 31, while Southern is also affected by the talks.
