Merton Council will pay its respects to one of its former leaders on September 13 at the first full council following the summer recess.

Geoffrey Smith, who was leader of the council from 1990 to 1991, died on August 25.

Elected as a councillor in May 1962, he represented the former Wimbledon East ward, and from May 1978 he represented the St Helier ward until his retirement in 1994.

Also an honorary alderman, Geoffrey was involved in several committees including education, policy and resources, finance, leisure, libraries and further education.

He was also a member of the Merton community and police consultative group and the joint consultative committee with ethnic minority organisations.

Councillor Stephen Alambritis, leader of Merton Council, said: “It was with sadness that I received the news of Geoffrey’s death. Colleagues and I remember him fondly.

“In serving the residents of Merton, he led a fulfilling life and was dedicated to local politics and public service.

“My condolences go to his family and friends at this sad time.”
