South West Trains are advising people not to travel to Waterloo all day after a train derailed outside the station.

The disruption is expected to continue into tomorrow.

The train partly left the tracks as it was pulling away from a platform at low speed at 5:40am.

Three people were checked by London Ambulance Service but nobody was taken to hospital.

Ten platforms are already shut as part of engineering works to enlarge the station's capacity.

Emergency services including police, paramedics and fire crews were called to the scene.

According to South West Trains: "An earlier points failure and an unrelated low-speed partial derailment has caused extensive disruption to services this morning.

"Trains are unable to use platforms 1 to 13 at London Waterloo and this reduction in available platforms means that many services will need to terminate before London Waterloo and many services will start away from London Waterloo.

"Most trains are experiencing severe delays and are subject to short notice alterations.

"Disruption to services is likely to persist for the remainder of the day.

"We are strongly advising you not to travel on our network today."

A spokesperson for Network Rail said: "Work to 're-rail' the train is underway this afternoon. Network Rail will then need to examine what, if any, damage was caused to the track.

"The incident happened as the train was pulling away from its platform at Waterloo. There were no injuries to the 23 passengers or two members of staff on board the train.

"A very limited service is now running to and from Waterloo, which is expected for the rest of today and tomorrow.

"An investigation to establish the cause of the incident is underway. It would not be appropriate to speculate on the cause of the incident at this time."
