New Wimbledon Theatre has officially announced its Autumn 2017 season, with highlights including Cabaret and Cilla, and the European premiere of Tenderly - The Rosemary Clooney Musical. 

Kicking off the season preview for press yesterday, (July 3), general manager Neil Chandler said: "The people of Merton should be very excited about the new season in this beautiful theatre."

This month, Bugsy Malone will take to the stage featuring children from the area, and an incredible set created by local Wimbledon College of Art student, Adam Nee. Director Kate McGregor said: "It's one of my favourite films of all time so I'm just a little bit excited to direct it."

Tenderly - The Rosemary Clooney Musical, will actually make its European debut in Wimbledon, having already been a smash hit in the US. Producer Joe Hodges said he had been inspired by Clooney's music as a child, and is thrilled to be bringing it to the area.

October dates for Flashdance in Wimbledon will be amongst the sixth months that Joanna Clifton stars in the show. Brought to the stage as the same team as Footloose, the show is expected to be the most popular of the Autumn season.

Bugsy Malone: stage experience @ New Wimbledon Theatre: August 25 and 26

Wimbledon Times:

The first stage experience at New Wimbledon Theatre, Kate McGregor is directing a cast of 36 children from the borough and beyond in a re-imagined version of the classic, Bugsy Malone.

Ms McGregor has casted two girls as gang bosses Fat Sam and Dandy Dan, and says the cast, most of whom previously have no theatrical experience, have risen to the challenge of putting on the full production with just two weeks of rehearsal.

Tenderly The Rosemary Clooney Musical @ New Wimbledon Studio: September 1 to 24

Rosemary Clooney’s journey starts with her simple Maysville, Kentucky childhood and follows her rise to Hollywood stardom. Her true story of success in film, radio, and TV contrasts with struggles in her personal life – with a career fading during the advent of rock-and-roll and her battles with addiction and depression.

Featuring all of your favourite Clooney hits including Someone to Watch Over Me, Hey There (you with the stars in your eyes), Mambo Italiano, Sway, Come On-A My House, and title track Tenderly.

Cabaret @ New Wimbledon Theatre: September 21 to 30

Pop Idol star Will Young reprises his critically acclaimed performance of Emcee in Rufus Norris’ production of Cabaret, after earning an Olivier award nomination and WhatsOnStage award. Playing Sally Bowles will be TV presenter and 2016 Strictly Come Dancing runner up Louise Redknapp.

Since its Broadway premiere in 1966, Cabaret has won a staggering number of stage and screen awards including 8 Oscars, 7 BAFTAs and 13 Tonys. Directed by National Theatre Artistic Director Rufus Norris and choreographed by Olivier Award winner Javier de Frutos, the production has enjoyed two smash hit West End runs.

Flashdance - The Musical @ New Wimbledon Theatre: October 2 to 7

Flashdance returns to the UK for the first time since 2011 starring Strictly favourite Joanne Clifton and singer-songwriter Ben Adams, formerly of band A1. The production tells the inspiring and unforgettable story of 18-year-old Alex, a welder by day and ‘flashdancer’ by night, who dreams of going to the prestigious Shipley Dance Academy and becoming a professional dancer.

Cilla - The Musical @ New Wimbledon Theatre: November 7 to 11

Wimbledon Times:

A musical adaptation of the critically acclaimed ITV mini-series, based on the early life of Cilla Black by BAFTA award winner, Jeff Pope. The new musical, opens in Cilla’s hometown at the Liverpool Empire before embarking on a nationwide tour.

The musical score will be the ultimate soundtrack to the 60’s including Cilla’s greatest hits

Anyone Who Had a Heart, Alfie and Something Tells Me, alongside a backdrop of the legendary “Liverpool Sound” including the Beatles’ Twist and Shout, and American influences like California Dreamin by The Mamas and The Papas and many more.

Son of a Preacher Man @ New Wimbledon Theatre: November 14 to 18

Wimbledon Times:

Featuring the greatest hits of Dusty Springfield, Diana Vickers and Debra Stephenson star in the new musical play by internationally-renowned writer Warner Brown and directed and choreographed by Craig Revel Horwood.

The production tells the story of three strangers drawn to the site of an old 1960s Soho club for help with their hopeless love lives.

Spamalot: November 21 to 25 @ New Wimbledon Theatre

The newest stage version of Monty Python's 1975 film will not have an all-star cast like the previous tours apparently, but the rewrite will s till be full of misfit knights, killer rabbits, dancing nuns and Frenchmen.

Winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best New Musical the hilarious Spamalot was written by Python legend Eric Idle, with a score co-written by John DuPrez including Always Bright Side of Life.

The brand new UK tour of Spamalot was produced by Mercury Theatre Colchester and Selladoor Productions. Tickets are available here.

Of Mice and Men @ New Wimbledon Theatre: March 19 to 24

With a cast still to be announced, the hotly anticipated tour of the Steinbeck classic will start in Canterbury in January 2018 before coming to Wimbledon in Spring.

Although set during the American Depression, the stage version of Of Mice and Men is rumoured to be focused on individual loneliness that steps away from previous productions of the novel.
