A concerned dad says a Merton park has 'turned into Dismaland' after a broken pipe has been pumping water into the playground for three weeks.

Joe Coville, who lives close by, says the burst pipe was underneath the playground area of Durnsford Road Recreation Ground.

Water still appears to be flowing from the pipe, despite workmen digging a metre-deep hole to inspect the damage.

Orange plastic fencing was left by the council to cordon off affected areas, but keeps falling down.

Mr Coville says it is a problem for nearby Little Learners, the nursery his three-year-old daughter attends, as the children are often allowed to play in the park. Also nearby is Wimbledon Park Primary School, which has now broken up for summer.

The dad of three says the park is starting to resemble Dismaland, the art installation of a broken down, dilapidated theme park created by Banksy in Weston-super-Mare

The water has also swept into the adjoining playing fields used by Wimbledon Park Primary School, and waterlogged the school grounds.

Mr Coville said: "People are trying to use it even though the council put up a useless orange plastic fence which falls down.

"The standing water is now full of algae. It's been about three weeks since the pipe burst.

"Apparently they can't work out where to turn the pipe off, so now the park resembles a swamp / water-park."

A council spokesperson said: “We alerted Thames Water as soon as we discovered there was a leak and made all the arrangements to give them access to the pipe so that the repairs can be made.

"Thames Water has postponed the works four times which is completely unacceptable and we are pushing for them to make the repairs so the play area can be enjoyed by families as soon as possible.”

Thames Water said the flooding is coming from a pipe on privae land and not a Thames Water pipe.
