Britain’s first dedicated scooter track has opened in in Merton.

Mostyn Gardens, which is adjacent to Poplar Primary School, is where the new ‘Grand Prix-style’ track is based.

Children aged between three to 11 are welcome to use the track on school holidays and weekends.

The circuit is made of tarmac with chicanes, a pit stop, mock petrol pumps, a road crossing and shop fronts included.

Katherine Davies, headteacher a Poplar Primary School, said: “We have created a unique area allowing children to play safely on their scooters in an imaginative and attractive environment.”

The headteacher was the mastermind behind the idea and she added that the “children, families and community have been amazing in the support they have given to this project and we hope it will be enjoyed by many local families over the summer holidays and in the years to come”.

Kids will have to wait until the summer holidays before being permitted to enjoy the track which has been officially opened by Deputy Mayor Judy Sanders.

Merton Council's cabinet member for community and leisure, councillor Nick Draper said: “What a brilliant idea from the school. We’re lucky to have great council officers too who helped on this and so many imaginative projects around Merton. My only regret is that I’m too old to scoot around it myself.”

The track cost £60,000 to make with the money being raised by Poplar Primary School though fundraising events, grants and a crowdfunding campaign.

Merton Council and Suez Communities Trust helped fund the track and Andrews Property Group presented a cheque of £10,000.

Olympic triathletes Alistair and Jonny Brownlee were also contributors.
