A festival management company has applied to hold an electronic music festival in Morden Park, near Wimbledon.

We Are The Fair Ltd has applied for a one-day premises licence for house and techno festival, Eastern Electronics.

Tickets are already on sale for the event on August 5, but five different representations have been made to a licensing sub-committee opposing the current proposal.

Merton Police, the London Fire Brigade, Merton public health department, Merton environmental health and pollution department and Merton environment and regeneration department have all made representations to the committee.

Twenty thousand people are expected to attend the music festival that would open at 11am and finish at 10.30pm.

Objectors say that the festival would increase levels of crime and disorder, risk public safety, cause a "public nuisance" and does not go far enough to protect children from harm.

Last year, 15 arrests were made at the over-18 event, then held at Hatfield House, Hertfordshire. The arrests were mostly made for possession with intent to supply psychoactive substances. Two arrests were made for knife-enabled robberies.

Merton Police have said they expect that criminal gangs from across London will come to Morden, and estimate that the total cost of policing the event would be over £26,000, which will impact on “already stretched weekend police resources.”

Seven couples have also booked their wedding ceremonies at nearby Morden Park House, a Grade II listed stately home. Objectors, including the police, argue noise from the festival will be above reasonable levels, and would “ruin” ceremonies booked by the couples.

A spokesperson for We Are The Fair said: "We have over 16 years’ experience working with all relevant authorities, officers and residents in producing safe and successful festivals.

"We appreciate that change can be difficult and want to assure that Eastern Electrics will be a world-class event that the borough can be proud of.

"We operate to the highest health and safety and production standards with meticulous, expert systems and are confident that the festival will have a positive impact across Merton."

The licensing sub-committee will take place at Merton civic centre on Wednesday May 10.
