A cyclist is believed to have been hit by a car at a busy crossroads which has been without working traffic lights for three days.

The crash, which happened shortly after 7.30am this morning near to South Wimbledon station, where Kingston Road meets Merton Road, comes after three days of complaints from residents and councillors about the traffic lights to Transport for London (TfL).

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said officers "came across" a collision between a car and a cyclist while on patrol at 7.30am this morning.

The London Ambulance Service (LAS) were called and took the cyclist - a 33-year-old man - to a south London hospital with minor injuries. No arrests have been made.

Cabinet member for children’s services and councillor for Abbey Ward, Katy Neep, said the traffic light problem may be linked to the flooding in Kingston Road on July 3, caused by a burst water main in the middle of the road.

Cllr Neep said: “I am very concerned about this. I use the junction every day, and for myself and all the other residents using it, it’s very worrying.

“We have been very clear to TfL that they have got to make sure they are giving us a permanent solution. I’m pushing TfL and so are council officers to try and make sure they are on this and they are finding out why this is happening.

“They will be doing a full investigation following the accident today. My thoughts are with the cyclist and I hope they will make a full recovery.

“This is now a matter of urgency. We don’t want to see any more accidents.”

Residents have been reporting problems with the traffic lights since Sunday, July 17, as they continue to stop and start working.

Cllr Neep has urged anyone who sees the traffic lights stop working to contact TfL via social media or by calling  0343 222 1234.

TfL and the London Ambulance Service have been contacted for comment.
