A WOMAN has dedicated herself to improving the environment in her community, a dedication that has earned her a nomination for a Merton volunteer award.

Alison Pelikan, of Victory Road, said: “I absolutely adore everything involving wildlife. Every fibre of myself connects me to nature.”

Among her many volunteer activities is her support of the volunteer weeding at the Wimbledon Library, which supports young children who have low self-esteem; her beekeeping with Wimbledon Beekeepers, including teaching and mentoring the trade to young people; and her help with Morden Hall Park’s nature group.

Ms Pelikan works with the foster care system, but finds time to volunteer share her knowledge there, as well, by educating people hoping to become foster carers.

She says she loves teaching young people about nature, since they are the group that will be in charge of nature in the future. She says she works to help the environment, and that in turn helps the community.

She said: “I was extremely surprised and pleased to have been nominated.”
