A schoolboy who raised £700 for charity through his cake sale last year is looking for donations to help him raise even more money this year.

Joshua Turner, nine, who attends St Matthews C of E Primary School, managed to raise hundreds of pounds for Cancer Research UK in May last year, after dozens of local businesses donated to his cake stall outside Raynes Park Station.

Joshua’s mother Jill Turner, who lives with her family in Linkway, said: “Last year it was mad. We didn’t expect it to be so popular but we were donated so many cakes.

“I don’t want to jinx anything. If we can make over £700, and hit nearly £800, that would be unbelievable. But I don’t want to set him a target and him be upset if he doesn’t reach it.

“We’ll just try and get a bit more than last year. Even if it’s just £30 or £40 more, it would still be amazing.

“The charity is massively close to our hearts. It’s just so nice to see someone so little have so much passion. He came up with the idea of doing it, and he really enjoys it. I can’t even tell you how proud I am.”

Mrs Turner, a community special needs dental nurse who is also an official volunteer and fundraiser for Cancer Research UK, previously lost her grandmother to the disease, and has since had her aunt fight breast cancer and her mother diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

Local businesses including the Co-op, Lime and Thyme, Absolute Abode, The Olive Garden, Starbucks and Waitrose have all agreed to donate cakes to the sale, which is due to be held outside of Raynes Park Station on Saturday, May 21.
