Waterstone's and WH Smith have confirmed they will be closing stores in Wimbledon town centre.

Both shops occupy a central location on Wimbledon Bridge, and are due to be replaced by a Metro Bank.

The fridge, as it is known locally, is among the areas earmarked for re-development by Crossrail 2 plans.

The Wimbledon Guardian has launched a petition against the plans.

The bank, which will incorpate a regional training centre, is expected to open sometime this year.

Many residents have expressed dismay at the closures, which mean there is no longer a large bookshop in Wimbledon town centre.

Waterstone's is due to close on Sunday.

A statement from Love Wimbledon said: "Love Wimbledon is working with Waterstone's and WH Smith to identify suitable new locations for the businesses in the town centre.

"As a Business Improvement District we want, like many customers and residents, to continue to see popular stores in our town centre and these would include WH Smith and Waterstone's."

Love Wimbledon also orginally objected to Metro Bank's proposal to take over the premises last year, arguing: "Opening a bank on this site will further restrict customer choice in the town centre by closing two significant anchor retailers, reducing Wimbledon's attractiveness and retail diverstiy, thereby reducing footfall to the area."

Waterstone's have confirmed its last day in Wimbledon will be Sunday, January 17, and recommended the nearest stores will now be in Clapham Junction and Sutton.
