The mayor of Merton visited a local primary school to recognise its commitment to providing a high level of physical education and sport for its students.

Councillor David Chung visited the Priory Church of England Primary School in Queens Road, Wimbledon on Monday, October 5 to present youngsters with the Gold Merton School Sport Mark.

To attain the award, the school had to provide 100 minutes of quality physical education to every student every week, and provide opportunities for students to compete in school sport competitions.

They also had to show that they foster talented students’ ability and assist in pathways to external clubs and competitions as well as provide leadership training to the Year 5 students.

Year 5 student, Henry Wyke said: "We got to do sport leading for Year 1 and at sports day.

"Sports leading is really fun because at your own lunchtime you can play fun games with children younger than you so they can have fun."

PE co-ordinator Cameron Beck said: "We are proud to announce we have received the Gold Merton School Sport Mark for our provision of opportunities within PE and sport.

"The Priory is committed to continuing this level of excellence and will strive to achieve this award again for the 2015/2016 school year."
