More than £2,000 has been raised for charity in memory of a Wimbledon teenager who died earlier this year.

Molly’s Smile Fund was set up in July 2015, following the death of 19-year-old Molly Burdett.

Her mother, Jane, began the fund, and in just three months has raised more than £27,000 for St George's Hospital Charity, where Molly was treated, and Histio UK, which funds research into the disease which Molly suffered with before her death.

The first Molly’s Smile Fitness Challenge Day took place on Saturday, September 27, in South Park Gardens, Wimbledon.

More than 120 people took part in a range of fitness classes throughout the day, including aerobics, stretch and interval training, and another 40 came along as volunteers.

Mrs Burdett said: "Molly’s Smile Fitness Challenge would not have been possible without the help of so many individuals and organisations from the local community.

"We are so grateful for the help and glad to see that the day was such a success.

Wimbledon Times:

Molly's family hailed the day as a success

"We hope that Molly’s Smile Fitness Challenge will be the first of many events raising funds for two wonderful charities."

In May 2015, Molly was diagnosed with the rare disease hemophagocyotic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), where the cells of the immune system fail to destroy infected or damage cells properly.

This causes the immune system to become over-stimulated, and begin to damage the patient’s tissues and organs, including the bone marrow, liver and brain.

Despite beginning chemotherapy to treat the disease, Molly tragically died on July 1, just six weeks after her first symptoms appeared.

Molly’s Smile Fitness Challenge raised £2,243 for the charities. Sainsbury’s in Wimbledon and Tooting provided supplies for the event, and Ellisons Estate Agency provided a donation of £450 towards the day.

Future fundraising plans include a parachute jump and running the London marathon.
