A mother concerned about road safety outside a primary school is calling on Wandsworth Council to act before a child is “knocked down and killed”.

Your Local Guardian:

Jessica Henley-Price started a petition asking the council to put in a zebra crossing outside Wix Primary School in Battersea after witnessing a number of "very near accidents" with children trying to cross Wix's Lane and Taybridge Road to get to school.

The illustrator and designer who has two children at the school has already got the support of more than 200 people, including the primary school's headteacher.

She said: "The problem is there aren't any speed signs and there is no pedestrian crossing.

"I try to get my children to cross the road and it's so dangerous because cars come flying up and flying down because no-one's realised that it's a school and there aren't enough signs.

"The reason I challenged this is because I'm really scared that someone is going to get knocked down and killed."

Mrs Henley-Price said the council has agreed to do a road traffic survey, but was worried they were being too slow to improve safety.

She said she believes part of the problem is that Taybridge Road is used as a thoroughfare for Clapham Common and Lavender Hill, making it a “nightmare” to cross during busy times of the day.

A council spokesman said: "We have been contacted by a parent who’s asked us to look at ways of improving safety levels near this school.

"We are looking into this very carefully to see what additional measures may be required."
