Raynes Park residents have expressed shock after a man was shot in a Waitrose car park.

From Monday: Man shot in Waitrose car park in Raynes Park

The man was shot in the leg outside the Coombe Lane store and taken to hospital, after first travelling to an address in Surrey.

The Met was called by Surrey Police to reports of the shooting at 12:40am on Monday morning, and the man was taken to a south London hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Part of the car park was cordoned off on Monday while officers investigated.

Akee Caussy, 26, had only been working in the nearby Princess Alice Hospice charity shop, also in Coombe Lane, for a few days when the incident occurred.

She said: "I’m very shocked. I wouldn’t expect this in Raynes Park, or in Waitrose.

"This is a very pleasant area. We get very good donations in the shop."

Julie Donabie, owner of gift shop My Favourite Things in Worple Road, and chairman of the Raynes Park Association of Local Businesses, is a resident in the area.

She said: "It’s a very happy local community. It’s been described as an up and coming area and it’s a low crime area.

"The shooting surprised me, but nothing shocks me.

"The way I look at it is it’s something that could have happened anywhere and it just happened to happen in Raynes Park."

Officers from the Met’s Trident Command are investigating the incident, but no arrests have yet been made.

Wimbledon Times:

The victim discharged himself from hospital on Monday.

Josh Willoughby, 22, a store supervisor at Absolute Organic in Kingston Road, said: "This is the first time I’ve heard of an incident like this in this area. You would maybe get it in Mitcham or Croydon, but not in Raynes Park.

"I think this is probably an isolated incident. The people here are extremely friendly.

"In the four or five years I have been here, I have never had one altercation with anyone. I’ve never seen a single gang at all."

Anyone with information should call the police on 101.
