A 31-year-old disabled woman is appealing for the return of valuable and sentimental items stolen from her home last weekend.

Claire Chapman, of Love Lane in Mitcham town centre, was staying with a relative in Morden on Saturday night when burglars smashed a glass pane in her garden door and unlocked it from the inside.

When she returned home on Sunday afternoon she found it "completely ransacked" with valuable technology and precious items missing - including her late mother's diamond and gold engagement ring which she had hoped to wear herself one day.

She said: "I came home and walked in my front door and I noticed my living room door was open and I never leave it open. Then I noticed one of the lamps was knocked over and the back door was smashed."

Ms Chapman, who uses a wheelchair to travel longer distances and suffers from scoliosis, immediately called police who sent a forensic team to her home.

She said: "It's horrible because I haven't got my mum's ring anymore. It meant quite a bit because my mum and dad had separated and so it was something my mum had given to me."

Thousands of pounds worth of valuables were stolen during the raid, including: an iPad mini, gold Apple MacBook, Fuji film insta camera, Michael Kors green purse, Links bracelet with silver skulls, rose gold Michael Kors bracelet and £400 worth of perfume.

Most of the jewellery had been gifts from her mother, a cancer patient who died of pneumonia in 2013, aged 54.

She said she believed burglars had recently targeted other homes in the street and an elderly neighbour's mobility scooter had been stolen from outside his home.

Merton police said there had been no burglaries in Love Lane since last year and its investigation into what happened was ongoing. Anyone with information should call police on 101.

There have been no arrests in the case.
