A memorial to mark the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima during World War Two is set to take place in Wimbledon next week.
Organised by the Wimbledon Disarmament Coalition (WDC) and the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), the ceremony will remember more 135,000 people who were killed in the destruction of the Japanese city.
It will be held on the South Side shores of Rushmere Pond in Wimbledon Common on Thursday at 8.45pm, where candles will be floated across the water in Japanese tradition.
The event is also part of the CND’s campaign against the bombing in Syria and Britain’s Trident programme.
Maisie Carter, chairwoman of the WDC, said: "We will be remembering those that died in Hiroshima but also Nagasaki."
"We think nuclear weapons are evil. We have enough of these bombs to destroy the whole world."
"The main thing we are now concerned with is the renewal of the Trident programme."
Joanna Bazley, secretary of WDC/CND, added: "A whole city was obliterated without warning 70 years ago and each modern Trident warhead is 10 times as powerful as the Hiroshima bomb".
