Commuters are fearing "travel chaos" will unravel on Monday when a busy road is turned into a one-way system for most of August.

Wimbledon Times:

Grand Drive will become one-way northbound between Bushey Road and Raynes Park Station for an estimated three weeks while a gas supply network is upgraded.

The permanent traffic lights in Kingston Road, at the junction with Raynes Park Bridge, will be replaced by traffic lights to help traffic flow safely.

Gas distribution company Southern Gas Networks (SGN) has announced it needs to replace existing metal gas mains and services with plastic polyethylene pipe to "ensure a continued safe and reliable gas supply to the local community".

Wimbledon Times:

Kevin Whincup, an ambulance first responder who lives on the Carter Estate in Raynes Park, said: "That will just cause chaos.

"Grand Drive in itself in the morning is bad coming down from Raynes Park and in the evening it's the other way round."

SGN project manager Tony Hollis said: "We’ve planned to carry out our project during the school summer holiday to minimise disruption to the local community.

"We appreciate that roadworks can be frustrating, whatever the time of year, and I apologise for any inconvenience."

He said the £1m upgrade would ensure the pipe would not have to be replaced again for 80 years.

A council spokesman said: "The council is continuing to work closely with SGN and London buses to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum for all road users.

"During the works a diversion will be in place to ease traffic flow and allow transport services to continue serving the area."
