It has been a busy 24 hours for the Wimbledon fire station crew after receiving calls to a boy stuck up a tree, a flooded fish and chip shop and a bedroom fire.

Three fire engines were sent to save a five-year-old boy trapped between two trees by the Wimbledon Common Golf Club in Camp Road.

A firefighter, who was called to the scene at 3pm, said: "He was trying to climb and he got wedged in between some trees on the track to Warren Farm.

"It didn't take long to get him down. He was fairly close to the ground."

A few hours later, a real blaze started in a bedroom in Arthur Road caused by sunlight beaming on a mirror.

A fire officer said: "There was a lot of smoke damage. The curtain was on fire so it was potentially well on its way."

Fortunately, the fire station was alerted at 6.30pm and firefighters had the blaze under control in about two hours. No-one was injured.

Wimbledon Times:

Then, last night, the fire crew was called to The Broadway after a burst pipe in the basement of the recently closed Cousins Fish and Chip Shop flooded the shop and a next door property.

Fire officers were on the scene at about 1am and were there until 2.30am.

The posh chippy is currently undergoing refurbishment to be turned into a bridal store.
