The mayor of Merton tried out a virtual reality headset at a charity’s 21st anniversary celebrations.

Councillor David Chung was at the event to congratulate The Squad, a Wimbledon-based charity which supports young people with learning difficulties, on reaching the milestone anniversary.

Volunteers at the charity felt it was important to mark the special occasion and invite the mayor along to join in the festivities.

"It was an honour to be invited and take part in the birthday celebrations," said coun Chung.

"The charity not only provides services to our young people with learning disabilities, they provide a social environment where young people can have fun and socialise with their friends."

As well as virtual reality headsets, attendees were also treated to 3D printing displays at the tech stall as well as more traditional activities, such as wet sponge throwing, and a circus skills workshop.

It was evident just how much The Squad has helped young people such as George, a Squad member for more than 10 years, who reflected on his time with the charity.

He said: "I’ve been at The Squad a long time - 11 years - and I’ve loved all of it."

Volunteer Sally Pitt said: "21 years is traditionally celebrated as a significant birthday, so it seemed an important milestone to mark for the organisation."

More than 100 people with learning disabilities have been members of The Squad over its 21-year history, and have been supported by around 70 volunteers and trustees over the years.
